August Recess!

August 5 – September 6: “Welcome Home”

The next eight weeks are critical for our efforts to win common sense immigration reform.  We must ensure that both at the national level and in dozens of targeted districts across the country, our movement is relentless in raising the stakes that the House has no choice but to advance immigration reform legislation that includes a pathway to citizenship for  11 million aspiring Americans.

Overall goals:

• Raise the moral and political urgency for immigration reform. Echo calls for a vote on a pathway to citizenship; advocate for a bill that  promotes family unity and includes a DREAM Act that covers the smallest dreamers.
• Engage and energize targeted representatives to come out publicly in support of citizenship.
• Tell the national story of growing sense of urgency in communities across the country, growing pressure on targets and increased local activity around the country (We’re not going away and we won’t take “no” for an answer”).

Message:

• The American people (as shown in poll after poll ) support immigration reform with that includes a pathway to citizenship. The Senate passed a comprehensive immigration bill that includes a pathway to citizenship – and now it’s the House’s turn. All we need is a vote.
• Legislation with anything less than a common sense pathway to citizenship would relegate millions of  aspiring Americans into a permanent underclass. This is not the way we do things in America.
• Educators have joined DREAMers to advocate support for reform for years, we simply won’t take “no” for an answer.
• Our students, our communities, and our economy can’t wait any longer for immigration reform. The time is now.

Organizing Strategy:

• Organize fellow educators and DREAMers to attend and speak at congressional town halls, and to make comprehensive immigration reform a key issue.
• Organize fellow educators and DREAMers to attend events in your Congressional district over the August recess.
• Organize educators and DREAMers to visit your Representative’s office over the recess.
